Caernarfon Castle dominates the landscape of the town

The picturesque town of Caernarfon is located in north west of Gwynedd where the River Seiont and Menai Straits meet.



The town is dominated by the majestic Caernarfon Castle which stands at the mouth of the River Seiont overlooking the harbour. The castle is perhaps the finest and best preserved of all the North Wales castles.

Caernarfon serves as the county capital of Gwynedd and is the location of the Gwynedd County Council offices as well as Gwynedd Archives, the archive library for the county.

The recently constructed Victoria Dock provides extensive facilties for mooring yachts and is an ideal location for exploring the popular Menai Straits.

There's lots to see and do in Caernarfon from the medieval castle to the Roman Fort of Segontium.

The town is the northern terminus of the narrow gauge Welsh Highland Railway which runs down through Snowdonia towards Porthmadog.

Within the town walls the narrow streets are lined with places to eat and drink from restaurants and cafes to bars.

You can also walk along Caernarfon's promenade where you can enjoy spectacular views of the Menai Straits and Isle of Anglesey to the west.

Caernarfon has good shopping facilities including a bustling pedestrainised high street located just a short distance from the castle.

Castle Square is a large pedestrianised area where people gather to enjoy the sunshine and relax. There is also a statue to David Lloyd George who besides being a famous Prime Minister of yesteryear was a councilor within the town.

Caernarfon is served by two large superstores, to the north of the town is a Morrisons Superstore and to the south a Tesco Superstore.

Caernarfon is a great place to stay and visit if you like historic castles and want to be within easy reach of the Snowdon Mountain Railway.

The Greenwood Forest Park adventure centre is just a few minutes drive to the east from the town and provides a fantastic fun day for the family.

The nearest train station to Caernarfon is located to the north in the city of Bangor and regular bus services provide a link to between the two.
